Join me for a 3-day journey exploring the natural beauty of Oregon, photographing three of my favorite subjects: Mountains, Waterfalls and Stars.
This workshop is geared toward the intermediate to beginning photographer who wants an intensive, hands-on experience with real-life subjects and loves the outdoors. We will be traveling along the Columbia River from Portland at a photographer’s pace (read: slow and purposeful) to capture many of the wonderful waterfalls located along the Gorge. Yes, Multnohma is on the itinerary, but so are many other gorgeous scenes. This area is a waterfall lover’s paradise as rains from high up in the Cascade Mountains swell rivers in the Spring time and are augmented with the start of Summer thaw. The combination creates spectacular drops, some easy to approach and others needing a bit of walking.
With our first day in the field a success, we will overnight in or around the town of Hood River with an opportunity to capture the night sky in all its glory. The next morning will see us up before the sunrise to get shots of the sun’s rays coloring Mt. Hood in pinks and orange (weather permitting). From here, we will travel South (after breakfast, mind you) and curve around Mt. Hood to capture shots from the flanks as well as a number of waterfalls on this side of the mountain. Evening will be spent at or near Government Camp. This night will afford us opportunities for more start photography if the weather is cooperating. With Mt. Hood as a backdrop, we will experiment with long exposures and stacking images for affect.
Another morning shoot from a new location is how we will greet our last day in the Cascades. The morning will be spent with local waterfalls including a short hike (snow level permitting) for broader views later in the day for those who can stay late.
During this workshop you will receive personal instruction on shooting techniques and theories to try in the field. I will be with you the entire time to answer questions and I keep my groups small to help facilitate this. You will be learning about:
- Slow shutter speeds and emphasizing action
- Broad vistas and wide angles
- Sunrise/sunset shots (gradient filters will be handy, but not required)
- Star trails and super long exposures
- Nature details beyond the obvious
- Framing, composition, direction in your images
- Creating panoramas and time lapse video
- How to capture more than just silky waterfall images
- And more!

Who Is This Class For?
This class is great for beginners and those wishing to grasp the fundamentals of making great photos. It is also geared toward intermediate photographers who want to learn more about nature photography and night photography while immersing in the element (no, I don’t mean you have to go swimming). We will be doing some light hiking, up to 4 miles round trip with your camera gear and a lunch, so you need to make sure you can walk for at least an hour comfortably.
What Do I Need To Bring?
Your camera, excitement to learn and a smile. A tripod will be required (I can suggest options in this regard) for the best quality as most of our shots will be slow shutter speeds, especially the night shots. Warm clothes will be needed because, although it will officially be Summer, the temperature can get cold at night in the mountains. Bring rain gear as well because this workshop will not be canceled if it rains. While a DSLR is not required, you will get the most out of this workshop with a camera that has the ability to take over manual control, especially for night shots. A remote cord for your camera is also suggested for crisper images. I am happy to suggest options for you.
Transportation, meals, parking fees and lodging are not included in the price of tuition and is the responsibility of each participant. I will be glad to facilitate carpooling arrangements for those interested.
Where To Stay?
We will be centering our overnight stops around Hood River and Government Camp on the south side of Mt. Hood. There are options in both locations for camping and hotels or lodges. You are welcome to choose the option that works best for you. I will be camping in both places. Meals will be up to each participant and I suggest a sack lunch for the first day. We will stop for dinner in time to get out and shoot the sunset both nights.
Anything Else?
I will be sending out a questionnaire to all participants before the workshop to get an idea of what topics to hit hard and what to dust over. I want this to be a workshop where you feel involved. And now for the boring stuff: There is a 50% refund of workshop tuition for cancellations up to two weeks prior to each workshop. Less than two weeks and there is no refund possible, although I will gladly transfer your enrollment to another workshop at any time for no additional cost. While this class is intended for adults, certain younger adults may be welcome but please email me first.
