Simplifying Backups And External Storage With Colors

I worked with a client recently who has an ingenious method for keeping her three external drives straight when viewing them in Finder on her Mac. Simply put, they are all different colors.

For me it was one of those, “Why didn’t I think of that?” moments. I have four different external drives for all my machines, performing various tasks. Some backup, some store and some are for taking data with me on the road. And they are all black.

I know the names because I’ve been using them for a while, but it’s not an intuitive method of organizing. I have taken to taping labels on my physical drives to match the names I see in Finder.

But colored drives? Simple and genius. She has blue, gold and black. Done.

I looked at Amazon to see what was available and Seagate, a name I trust, has slim 1-5TB portable drives in four colors.

When I have to refresh my drives in the future, I know I’ll pick something other than black to keep me organized.

What simple tricks do you find useful when organizing your external data?
